Introduction to Math
This week we completed several assessments to see where students are in their understanding of math. I introduced them to classroom routines and daily practices.
These include:
In the examples in the pictures, students were asked to represent "skip counting" or "counting by 5s, 10s, or 3s" using a variety of strategies. They initially worked on four of their own strategies in their math journals. I asked several students to share their ideas on the board. Then, we partnered up and discussed how our strategies were similar and different from those shared on the board. We also discussed which strategy would be best to show to younger students, and which would be best for older students. Have your child share the ideas they learned!
These include:
- Daily math fluency practice
- Sharing ideas on whiteboards for class responses
- Solving problems using multiple strategies
- Sharing our ideas with our peers
- Discussing the merits of different strategies
- Comparing and contrasting strategies to determine which works best in each situation

First Week of School Activities
During the first week of school, we set the stage for the kind of year we want to have. Most importantly, we are committing to go 212 degrees in everything we do this year. We will have a positive attitude about all of our adventures, and we will gain the most enjoyment from them this way. The videos below include the 212 degree inspirational video and a TED talk by Joe Smith about how the small things can make a difference. I hope you and your family will enjoy watching them!
